Afiq Romi
b. 1997,
Penang,
Malaysia
Rooted in deep introspection, Afiq Romi’s work explores personal memories and lived experiences, translating them into surreal, dreamlike imagery. He draws inspiration from everyday encounters and observations, reshaping them into visual metaphors that examine the uncanny, the intimate, and the unseen layers of ordinary life. Central to his practice is an ongoing inquiry into the evolving relationship between the self and the world, navigating identity, vulnerability, and transformation through a surreal lens.
A recurring motif in his recent body of work is the cactus, a symbol that historically embodies survival, resilience, danger, beauty, and acceptance. To Afiq, the cactus becomes a shifting metaphor: both shield and wound, fragility and endurance. By merging its form with the human body or placing it in delicate, symbolic encounters, he reflects on the tension between vulnerability and strength, and how personal and cultural symbols continue to evolve over time.
Afiq Romi is a multidisciplinary artist, working across painting, drawing, and new media, blending technical skill with imaginative vision. Drawing inspiration from the mundane and everyday life, Afiq infuses his subjects with surreal, dreamlike elements that speak to memory, identity, and introspection. His deeply personal work often translates emotional experiences into visual metaphors, exploring human vulnerability, transformation, and the uncanny in familiar forms. Since 2017, his pieces have been exhibited locally and internationally, including in notable events such as the MEAA Open and HOM Art Trans.
